An Easter Story by Linda Crowder, March 2005

I would like to look at Easter from a mother’s point of view.    We know and are so very thankful for what Christ did for us and why we celebrate this special time but have you every considered what it must have been like for Mary to see her Son on the cross that day?

We as mothers have a very special connection with our children from the time they are conceived.  We form a bond with our children before they are even born.  We love them and pray that they will be healthy and happy.  We make preparations for their arrival and we go through the valley of the shadow of death to bring them into the world.

I would venture to guess that Mary went through much the same thing.   The conception of Jesus was a miracle of God but the feelings for this special Child were no less important or real to Mary.

Mary knew that she would bring the Son of God into the world but as He grew she loved Him with a Mother’s love.   We don’t know what happened to Him as a young Child but I would imagine He was very much like our children.  He was hungry, He need his diaper changed, He might have fallen and hurt himself so He needed to be held and loved just as our children do.

The difference was that she had a very special Child to nurture because one day she would have to see Him beaten and bloody and nailed to a cross for her sins as well as ours.  She could have been unwilling to be our Savior’s mother, but instead she trusted God and did what needed to be done for this special Child.

Our children are special to us as well as to God and it’s our responsibility to be willing to give our children to God and allow Him to use them for His honor and glory.  We must love them and teach them God’s Word and their purpose in this life. To many times we want to run their lives and have them live the life we want for them and not the life God has ordained for them.  Can you imagine how much harder it would have been for Jesus if Mary hadn’t been obedient to God?

Can you imagine what she was going through as she saw her beloved Son wrongly accused, beaten beyond recognition then nailed to a cross for the sins of the world?   Thank God we as mother’s never had to see that happen to our children.

Mary was no saint as some make her out to be, she was just a mother that loved her Son and was obedient to God.   With Mary as an example of a good mother how can we be any less for our own children?
